Project Scope
Match Clearing Limits to the Next Use of the Land
Clearing for a building site, utility corridor, pond, road or fence line can require different removal limits. Identify vegetation to remove and areas to retain. Clearing and grubbing may include trees, brush, stumps and roots, while debris piling, loading and haul-off need their own scope decisions.
The next phase matters: rough grading after clearing is different from preparing a compacted building pad or installing aggregate. Share the intended use, equipment access and debris-handling requirements so the clearing proposal and follow-on earthwork meet at a clear boundary.
Information for a Clearing Proposal
- Location, marked clearing limits and vegetation or features to retain.
- Brush, tree, stump and root removal requirements within those limits.
- Debris piling, loading, haul-off or on-site processing to review where applicable.
- Access restrictions and whether rough grading or follow-on sitework is required.

Project Questions
Land Clearing: Scope and Planning Questions
- Does clearing include stump and root removal?
- Stump and root removal are available scopes. Include them explicitly in the request; removing brush or trees does not by itself define how below-ground material should be handled.
- Can clearing be priced separately from grading?
- Describe the clearing limits, debris handling and desired condition at completion, then identify any grading as a separate scope. A combined sitework request can include both when that is what the project needs.
- Commercial sitework — For clearing as part of a development package.
- Ponds and lakes — For the excavation phase after pond-site clearing.
- Roads and aggregate — For constructing the access route after clearing.
