Project Scope
Define the Earthwork Before Moving Material
Excavation removes or relocates material; grading shapes it to the intended elevations and slopes. A proposal for a building pad, embankment or drainage grade should identify the cut areas, fill areas, finished levels and material-handling requirements, rather than describe the work only as dirt moving.
The scope may involve balancing material on site, importing fill or exporting spoils. Rough grading establishes the general shape, while fine grading prepares the specified surface for the next phase. Subgrade preparation and compaction should be identified alongside the excavation quantities when they are part of the request.
Information for an Excavation and Grading Estimate
- Site location, grading plans, target elevations and available earthwork quantities.
- Areas to excavate or fill, pad dimensions, slope details and drainage objectives.
- On-site material-placement areas and known import, haul-off or access requirements.
- Specified subgrade and compaction requirements, project sequence and bid deadline.

Project Questions
Excavation and Grading: Scope and Planning Questions
- Can excavation include building-pad preparation?
- Yes. Building-pad preparation, cut and fill, subgrade preparation and compaction are existing service scopes. Send the pad dimensions, planned elevations and applicable specifications so the requested work can be priced clearly.
- What is the difference between rough and fine grading?
- Rough grading establishes the broader elevations and shape of the site. Fine grading refines the surface to the specified grade before the next construction phase. The needed finish depends on the plans and intended surface.
- Can material stay on the property?
- On-site placement and relocation, material import and off-site haul-off are available scopes. Whether material can be balanced on site depends on quantities, placement space and the project requirements; identify those constraints before pricing.
- Commercial sitework — When earthwork is part of a broader development package.
- Ponds and lakes — For basin excavation, cleanout and pond-repair scopes.
- Roads and aggregate — When the graded surface will become a road or aggregate area.
